The Yorkshire Regiment Remembrance Website is dedicated to commemorating the officers and men of The Yorkshire Regiment who served during the First World War, and particularly those who gave their lives.
At the time of the First World War the full title of the regiment was Alexandra, The Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment, which in 1920 became The Green Howards (Alexandra, The Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment), generally referred to simply as The Green Howards.
The naming of the various Yorkshire Regiments that were raised over the years causes some confusion, and a note explaining the names of the Yorkshire Regiments is included later on this page.
The Website Content
During the First World War The Yorkshire Regiment raised twenty-four battalions. More than 65,000 officers and men served with the Regiment.
Over 9,300 lost their lives and more than 24,000 were wounded.
Research Note
For many years it was believed that approximately 7,500 men of The Yorkshire Regiment lost their lives during the First World War. That figure originated from the Roll of Honour in Richmond Parish Church. Subsequent research has established that the true figure exceeds 9,300. The difference includes men who died after transfer to other units, those serving with Labour Battalions, the Machine Gun Corps and other formations, together with men who died after the Armistice.
The website contains thousands of photographs of war memorials, war graves and individual soldiers, together with biographies, historical notes and research material collected over many years.

The Yorkshire Regiments
One point that frequently causes confusion concerns the various regiments which carried the name "Yorkshire". This website is concerned solely with The Yorkshire Regiment (Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own), which became The Green Howards in 1921.
Other county regiments included the West Yorkshire Regiment (The Prince of Wales's Own), the East Yorkshire Regiment, the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and the York and Lancaster Regiment. Although these regiments all served with distinction during the First World War, they are separate regiments with their own histories and memorials.
Throughout this website, references to The Yorkshire Regiment relate only to The Yorkshire Regiment (Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own) unless specifically stated otherwise.
The following pages explain how to use the website, search for an individual soldier and make the best use of the extensive research material that has been assembled over many years.
